The Duchess of Sussex has given a rare insight into her marriage with Prince Harry, revealing they are "really happy" as their family continues to grow and evolve. According to People magazine, Meghan made the comments following the couple's recent three-day tour of Nigeria.

"We're just doing great. And happy to be watching our family grow up and evolve," the 42-year-old told the publication. "Of course, I'm happy - we're really happy."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex began dating in 2016 after being set up on a blind date. They married at Windsor Castle in May 2018 in a ceremony watched by millions around the world. The couple now have two children together - son Archie, 5, and daughter Lilibet, 2.

Their visit to Nigeria marked Harry and Meghan's first overseas trip as a family since relocating to California in 2020 after stepping back as senior working royals. The couple were invited by Nigeria's military to promote the Invictus Games for wounded veterans and empower young people.

During the whirlwind tour from May 10-12, Meghan embraced her Nigerian heritage which she recently discovered through a genealogy test. At a women's leadership event in Abuja co-hosted by economist Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Duchess referred to Nigeria as "my country" and spoke about being a role model.

"It's been eye-opening to be able to know more about my heritage and to be able to know this is just the beginning of my discovery," Meghan said according to reports by AFP. "What's been echoed so much really in the past day by men and women alike is 'Oh! We weren't surprised when you found out you were Nigerian.'"

The former Suits actress, whose mother Doria Ragland is African American, went on to say the qualities attributed to Nigerian women are "brave, resilient, courageous, powerful, beautiful."

Alongside the leadership event, Harry and Meghan's itinerary included visiting a school for a mental health workshop, the Prince taking part in a sitting volleyball game with wounded soldiers, and attending a fundraising polo match in Lagos.

In her interview with People, Meghan also reflected on balancing work and motherhood, revealing advice given to her years ago by former mentor Bonnie Hammer, who ran NBCUniversal when Meghan starred in Suits.

"Bonnie Hammer was a huge mentor, remains a huge mentor to me," Meghan said. "And I remember...I said, 'How do you find the balance?' And she said, 'You don't, you'll never find the balance.'"

The Duchess added: "What I think that to mean now is that balance will always change for you...being a mum has always been a dream of mine. And I'm so fortunate that we have two beautiful, healthy, very chatty sweet children."
