As many of you have seen in the news, Harry has come under fire for putting himself forward for this American award which honors military heroism. The Pat Tillman Award was established in memory of Pat Tillman, who famously left the NFL to join the U.S. Army in 2002. Tragically, Tillman lost his life in Afghanistan just two years later at the young age of 27. He embodied enormous courage, sacrifice and service, becoming a symbol of patriotism.
The award exists to honor those who demonstrate similar characteristics of principle and commitment through their military or public service endeavors. Harry seems to believe the work he's done advocating for veterans via his Invictus Games foundation and mental health initiatives warrants consideration. However, as a former naval officer and citizen of Harry's country, I believe this self-nomination was incredibly misguided and disrespectful to the true meaning and legacy of the award.

/p>Let me be clear - Harry deserves praise for spotlighting the struggles faced by many veterans. However, there is simply no comparison between supporting veterans from a safe distance as a financially privileged celebrity patron, versus the unwavering commitment and ultimate sacrifice of true heroes who answered their country's call to active military duty. While Harry did serve briefly as an Army air Corps helicopter pilot in Afghanistan, he ultimately traded in his uniform for a lavish Hollywood lifestyle the moment family constraints were removed.
Since severing all ties with the military, Harry appears more motivated by commercial opportunities and influencing global politics from afar, rather than quietly honoring sacrifice. His brief operational flying does not qualify him for a lifetime achievement award on the same level as giants like Pat Tillman, who gave everything on the front lines, not when more convenient. Many other deserving nominees who served full careers defending freedom made far greater personal sacrifices, yet go unrecognized due to lack of money, fame and PR teams promoting their merits.

By unilaterally lobbying for himself, it reeks of a desperate thirst for applause and attention rather than a humble commitment to supporting veterans - something does not sit right about military associations purely for attention and status. Harry seems increasingly antipathetic towards his nation and its institutions now that he has wealth and status. He would do well to realize dignified actions often speak louder than lavish awards or platitudes.
Leading quietly by noble example through true service, rather than constantly campaigning for recognition as some kind of misunderstood maverick, would earn far greater admiration - both in the U.K. and U.S. Perhaps it is time our foreign royal learned a thing or two about humility, discretion and allowing one's merits to shine through without need for self-promotion. His current petulant behavior and contempt for traditions risks severely damaging youth interest in service beyond repair if left unchecked.

This is a far cry from the inspirational leadership worthy of emulating true heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice. While supporting veterans is laudable, constant self-aggrandizement sets an extremely poor example which is rightly earning Prince Harry increasing scorn from the military community. I sincerely hope this misjudgment serves as a lesson that one cannot redeem past privileges or shortcomings through awards and spin alone. Duty, honor and humility will always carry far greater weight for those who have truly worn the uniform.
