Jimmy Saville was a famous BBC television and radio personality in the UK throughout much of the latter half of the 20th century. However, in the years since his death in 2011, allegations of widespread sexual abuse have completely overshadowed his public persona. In addition to being a prolific sexual predator, questions also remain about the extent of Saville's connections to the British Royal Family. He was well known to be good friends with Prince Charles, but rumored to have ties that ran even deeper.

A 2021 article in the Daily Mail sheds some light onjust how far Saville's royal associations may have gone. The report detailed how transcripts from a 2009 police interview with Saville had been heavily redacted to remove any references he made to the Royal Family. In total, Saville's mentions of the monarchy over the course of the interview were blanked out nearly 100 times. Even more suspiciously, the transcripts had first been sent to Buckingham Palace for "vetting" before the censored versions were released.

Why would Britain's top law enforcement need to get palace approval over what could and couldn't be included from their interview with a renowned pedophile? That level of privilege and influence over the police raises major questions. Saville was known to boast proudly of his connections to senior royals like Charles, but the depth and potentially compromising nature of those friendships was clearly something Buckingham wanted suppressed.

The involvement of the Queen's representatives points to a concerted cover-up. If Saville's quotes were as benign as the palace claimed, there would be no reason to scrub them from the public record. Their interference suggests deeply uncomfortable truths were at risk of surfacing. Sadly, this fits with a longstanding pattern of British institutions prioritizing royal reputations over protecting victims. Much like Prince Andrew's association with Jeffrey Epstein, it seems questionable relationships run in the family.

The Daily Mail report underscores how the monarchy still believes they are above the law and accountability. Why should statements to law enforcement be submitted for palace pre-approval in the first place? It reeks of corruption and only damages faith in the justice system. If the royals truly had nothing to hide regarding Saville, they would have nothing to fear from full transparency. Their instinct to covertly erase all traces of his royal allusions is telling.

It also makes a mockery of claims the family has no improper sway over governmental bodies. Here was clear evidence of police kowtowing to keep unsavory royal matters hidden, with Buckingham's privacy taking precedence over basic openness and the public interest. No one should be exempt or possess that level of control, yet time and again scandals show the Windsors think the rules simply do not apply to them. Situations like this are a key reason more people in the UK are embracing anti-monarchist stances.

However, the mystery of Saville's royal relationships may never be fully solved while the monarchy remains in power. Any institution will inevitably try to manage reputational damage to the crown. As long as Buckingham Palace can censor and cover-up, the true depth of any toxic partnerships will stay safely buried. Their brand will always take priority over justice or the people, even regarding some of the country's most heinous predatory criminals. Maybe one day victims will get the transparent inquiry they deserve, but for now questions over the palace's potential complicity in Saville's wrongdoings will likely remain.
