There will be no easy ride for Prince George as he undergoes significant development and preparation for his future role as monarch. As the second in line to the throne at just 11 years old, there is a lot expected of the young royal as he is gradually introduced to royal duties and responsibilities. Meanwhile, his younger siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will have to adjust to living in George's shadow while also carving out their own roles within the royal family.
However, thanks to the parenting approach of Prince William and Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, George and his siblings will not have to deal with the same level of pressure experienced by previous generations of royal children. William and Catherine are determined to give their children as normal an upbringing as possible while still instilling in them a sense of duty to the crown. Rather than pitting the siblings against each other in importance, they are fostering a close bond between the three of them.

While William rightly blames some of the tension within the royal family on Prince Harry and Meghan's actions, he also acknowledges that the traditional system of the heir and spare has caused problems. No child should feel less valued just for their birth order. William does not want to put George, Charlotte or Louis through unnecessary distress as they grow up. He and Catherine fully dedicate themselves to the happiness and wellbeing of their children above all else.
This more modern approach to parenting royal children helps address what William calls the "spare problem" that has troubled past royal families for generations. But questions still remain about what support George will receive as he prepares for kingship. As the primary heir, he will soon face restrictions for his safety like being prohibited from traveling with William, who is also in line for the throne. When George turns 12 next year, this rule will likely go into effect just as it did for William in 1994.

Catherine understands how challenging the future path will be for her son as these new responsibilities take shape. She can't help but feel stirred with maternal emotion at the idea of George having to make personal sacrifices. It serves as a reminder of how the royal family must balance duty to the crown with their private lives. But for now, George, Charlotte and Louis are allowed to enjoy the lighter moments of their childhood.
That cheeky side of 11-year-old George's personality was on full display at Trooping the Colour in 2022. According to lip readers, after being giggled at by senior royals like Princess Kate and Camilla, George remarked to others nearby "bet they're kind of proud of me." Always the showman for the crowds, George then turned to wave at thousands of cheering fans. Later on the Buckingham Palace balcony, George took on an older brother role, guiding shy Prince Louis and keeping him facing forward during the festivities.

Princess Charlotte also played her part in keeping her younger siblings in line. At one point, she told Louis to put his arm down as the national anthem began. Footage of the close bond between the three Cambridge children was a delight for fans on social media. While a weighty future is ahead for Prince George as heir to the throne, in these earlier years, William and Kate are focused on allowing their children to enjoy their youth with playfulness and camaraderie between brother and sister. George will undoubtedly draw wisdom and strength from the loving support system cultivated within his young family.
