Even casual followers of royal news will likely be aware that Kate Middleton's brother James has a couple of dogs. His old hound Ella was part of the family for many years and very close to James. In his recent memoir, James mentions that one of Ella's descendants, a dog named Ora that he gave to William and Kate, might have helped Kate through her cancer diagnosis last year.

According to new details from James Middleton's memoir, the princess's younger brother struggled academically in his teenage years. He is said to have had to retake his A-Level chemistry course four times while studying at Marlborough College in Wiltshire, the same prestigious boarding school that his sister attended. James recalls how his mother Carole was left distraught after his father Michael said that private school was a waste of money for James and his education. This came up as Carole and Michael discussed whether their son's £32,000 per year education at Marlborough was worth the substantial fees they were paying.

In his own words, James wrote "After a year of resisting my A-levels, I scrape into Edinburgh University with the minimum permitted grades." He added that "Mom and Dad just wanted the best for me.” Today, Middleton studiously avoids criticizing his school or beloved parents, saying he learned valuable survival skills during his time at Marlborough.

The relationship between Prince William and his brother Harry has experience some strains in recent years, which has led to intense media speculation. This estrangement has caused Prince Charles to strengthen his bond with his brother-in-law James Middleton, who seems to have taken on an important supportive role in Prince William's life, helping to mitigate the void left by Harry. A renowned royal biographer has noted that William finds great comfort in being close to his wife Kate's family.

Ever since meeting Kate at St Andrews University where their romantic relationship began, William has become deeply integrated into the Middleton family. He is even said to have amicably referred to Kate's father Michael as "Dad." For his part, James Middleton has expressed admiration for William, describing him as the "big brother he never had." He has been vocal in his approval of William from the beginning of his relationship with Kate, which has served to strengthen their bond.

In his memoir, James shares anecdotes about their relationship, revealing that William has been such a long-standing presence in their lives that there is a real sense of brotherhood towards him. He writes that he considered William as a big brother and always trusted him to take care of his sister. This perception of William as an ideal partner for Kate is clearly reflected in James's words. As he says, "He feels as if they were made for each other. William has been in our lives for so long, we've grown very fond of him. He feels like our older brother and he and Catherine are clearly a good fit, just right for each other."

James also notes that Ella, his beloved hound, was present at many important moments in his life, including the first time he met his now-wife Alizee. In this way, James' memoir not only offers insight into his family life and bond with William, but also portrays a deeply personal journey of love and loss.

The relationship between Prince William and James Middleton exemplifies how family ties can be a source of support during times of conflict or estrangement. While William's relationship with his brother Harry faces ongoing difficulties, his closeness with the Middleton family seems to offer him an escape where he can find solace and emotional connection.

When Kate was spotted in public for the first time after undergoing surgery and hospitalization in January, the person by her side was her mother, Carole Middleton. Just two weeks after being seen in the passenger seat of a car driven by her mother, Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, announced publicly that she had been diagnosed with cancer the previous year. In only her second public appearance since making that announcement, Kate attended Wimbledon with her sister, Pippa Middleton Matthews, as well as her daughter Princess Charlotte - signaling the crucial role of her family in her recovery.

Kate's younger brother James further emphasized the family's support on Instagram after her cancer announcement, writing that "Over the years we've climbed many mountains together as a family. We will climb this one with you too." The Middleton clan is clearly a foundation of love and support that Kate, and by extension Prince William, has always been able to rely on through difficult periods. Their bond with James Middleton in particular appears to offer an additional protective element during times when other family connections have become strained.
