Harry promised his father that a visit would happen soon. Yet weeks have passed, and that promised meeting still has not taken place. Again and again, Prince Harry has reportedly reassured King Charles that he would bring Archie and Lilibet to see him. Now the Sussexes have been living in Britain for several weeks, only a relatively short drive from the King’s residences, but there is still no confirmed date. According to one reported royal source, Charles is deeply disappointed.
So what exactly was Harry supposed to have promised his father? Why does one insider describe Charles as a grandfather in a way we rarely hear about a reigning monarch? And perhaps most intriguingly, when was the situation completely reversed, with Harry himself waiting for an opportunity to see his father?
According to Australia’s Woman’s Day, a royal insider claims that Charles expected the Sussexes’ return to Britain to give him a chance to rebuild his relationship with his grandchildren. After years of seeing Archie and Lilibet mostly from a distance, the King apparently hoped that living closer would naturally lead to more regular family time. Instead, the source claims, Harry has continued saying that a visit would happen “very soon,” without actually setting a date.

Several possible reasons have reportedly complicated the situation. The children have school commitments, Harry has his own work schedule, and the wider tensions within the family have not disappeared. There are also continuing concerns surrounding security whenever Harry travels with his children.
The situation is particularly striking because of what happened earlier in the summer. On July 10, Charles welcomed Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet to Highgrove. It was reportedly the first time in more than four years that the King had seen both children together. For a brief moment, the meeting appeared to signal a thaw in the strained relationship.
Buckingham Palace even confirmed the private family meeting, something it does not routinely do. No official photographs were released, but the significance of the gathering was obvious. Then, toward the end of August, the Sussexes settled in the Cotswolds. Suddenly, the enormous distance separating California from Britain had disappeared. The children were attending an English school, and the family was now only a couple of hours away from several of Charles’s homes.
Yet the expected increase in visits apparently did not happen.
That makes the situation even more surprising when compared with Harry’s own comments about his father. During his BBC interview in May 2025, Harry spoke openly about Charles’s health and admitted that he did not know how much time his father had left. Many people naturally assumed that such concerns would make Harry want to spend as much time with his father as possible.

There have also been conflicting reports about what is happening behind the scenes. Some reports claim Charles has already made time available to see Harry and Meghan before Christmas, while others suggest Harry’s attempts to contact his father have faced difficulties. Neither Buckingham Palace nor the Sussexes have publicly confirmed those claims.
What does appear consistent across the reports is the idea that Charles wants a closer relationship with Archie and Lilibet.
One Woman’s Day source reportedly described the King as someone who “absolutely loves being a grandfather.” The same insider acknowledged that Charles may not always have been the ideal father, but claimed that he has embraced his role as a grandfather. That distinction is important because Charles’s own relationship with fatherhood has often been examined through the complicated history of his childhood and his relationship with his sons.
Harry himself has written about painful moments involving his father. In Spare, he recalled the night Diana died and described Charles coming into his room to tell him what had happened. Harry remembered the moment as emotionally distant, saying his father did not hug him.

Charles also experienced a relatively unusual childhood. His parents were frequently away because of royal duties, including a lengthy Commonwealth tour when he was very young. Later, he attended Gordonstoun, the demanding Scottish boarding school that has long been associated with his formative years.
Yet Harry has also made clear that he loved his father and wanted a closer relationship with him. Those feelings can exist alongside memories of disappointment.
With his grandchildren, however, Charles appears to have approached the role differently. William’s children have grown up relatively close to the King. George, Charlotte and Louis have had regular opportunities to spend time with their grandfather, including family occasions at Sandringham.
Archie and Lilibet had a very different experience. For years, they lived thousands of miles away in California. Their grandfather’s relationship with them was therefore largely limited by geography, royal duties and the wider family dispute. They are now old enough to understand more about their family, but reports suggest their relationship with Charles remains limited.
For Harry, there is also another side to the story.
Security has remained one of his most important concerns. After losing publicly funded police protection arrangements, Harry has repeatedly argued that bringing his family to Britain creates risks. That concern reportedly affected even the Highgrove meeting. More recently, reports of people watching the area around the children’s school would only reinforce those fears.

Harry has often connected his security concerns to what happened to his mother. He has repeatedly expressed a desire to ensure that his own children never face the same dangers he associates with Diana’s life.
So the delay may not simply be a matter of Harry refusing to visit his father. Every trip involving Archie and Lilibet can involve security planning, school schedules and logistical complications.
But there is one uncomfortable reality for Charles: time cannot be postponed forever.
The King has been undergoing treatment for cancer since 2024. Although official statements have indicated that his treatment has entered a more manageable phase, Charles is still 77 and continues to carry a demanding schedule. For a grandfather who wants to build memories with his grandchildren, every postponed visit matters.
And this is where the story takes its most interesting turn.
Only two years ago, Harry was the one waiting.
In May 2024, Harry travelled to Britain for an Invictus Games event at St Paul’s Cathedral. Charles had been diagnosed with cancer only months earlier, and Harry had initially travelled to Britain immediately after hearing the news. That first meeting lasted roughly half an hour.
