In a legal battle that has dragged on for months, Prince Harry has lost his defamation case against controversial British television personality Piers Morgan. Harry sued Morgan for comments he made questioning the truthfulness of claims Harry and his wife Meghan Markle made during their explosive Oprah interview last year.

While the details of the ruling have not been made public, sources close to the case say the judge dismissed Harry's suit, finding that Morgan was exercising his right to free speech under British law. Morgan gloated over the victory on social media, tweeting a picture of himself with the caption "Sorry Harry, you can't censor the free press."

The loss is another blow to Harry's already strained relationship with his father King Charles III and the rest of the royal family. Insiders say Charles is "livid" with his son for continuing to drag the monarchy into public spats and controversies. The king was reportedly hoping Harry would quietly drop the Morgan lawsuit to avoid further negative headlines for the Crown.

Charles' anger has been amplified by Harry and Meghan's decision to refer to themselves as "royals" during their recent trip to Nigeria as part of their work with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's Archewell foundation. While the couple carried out charitable works during the visit, their use of the term "royal" implies they still have an official role representing the British monarchy, which they gave up when they stepped back as senior working royals in 2020.

A royal source spoke to journalists, saying "Their Nigerian visit may have done some good for charity, but referring to themselves as 'royals' was a slap in the face to the king and the institution of the monarchy. The king has had enough of Harry and Meghan's antics and half-in, half-out behavior regarding their royal duties and status. A line needs to be drawn."

There is speculation that Charles may move to further distance the royal family from Harry and Meghan by stripping them of their remaining royal titles and patronages. While Harry will always be princely by blood, as the head of state and the House of Windsor, Charles has the authority to take additional steps to separate the couple from the institution.

Only time will tell if relations can be repaired, or if the rift between Harry, Meghan and the rest of the Windsors will continue to deepen. It seems the loss to Piers Morgan and referring to themselves as "royals" in Nigeria may have been the final straws for an already frustrated King Charles in his ongoing strained relationship with his son and daughter-in-law. The future of the royal family may now see Harry and Meghan moving farther away from "The Firm" than ever before.
