It seems Harry is finally facing the consequences of his actions now that he has stepped back from royal duties. For so long he has been shielded from truly understanding how his behavior impacted others, particularly his family. Living a life of immense privilege as a member of the royal family, Harry likely never had to consider how his deeds may hurt the very people who supported him.
This period of reflection must be incredibly difficult for Harry. Harry clearly had no comprehension of what the royal family represents or the concept of selfless duty to one's nation. It is evident he was unaware of how he was tarnishing the charitable legacy of his late mother, father and grandfather, who worked tirelessly for their causes in spite of harsh criticism.

Harry's relationship with his now ex-wife Meghan also appears to have negatively influenced his view of the monarchy. Questions around the legitimacy of their various trusts and foundations have understandably made the public more skeptical of royal-affiliated charities. Using his mother's death to justify inappropriate behavior was an egregious misstep that showed his stunning lack of empathy and understanding of how others experience grief.
For someone who reportedly felt deep anguish over losing his mother, Harry seems unable to comprehend that his current actions have caused similar pain to his family as a whole. As the prodigal son, he remains clueless as to why his usual warm welcome home was not immediately forthcoming this time. Having faced no true consequences in the past, this harsh wake up call of being effectively cast out must come as a shock.
