Whispers of anticipation mingled with hints of uncertainty in the corridors of Buckingham Palace as the nation awaited the dawn of King William the Fifth's reign. Discussions of succession and protocol unfolded, shrouded in a veil of secrecy, as the royal family's curiosity was fueled by a desire to understand the inner workings of the monarchy at this tempestuous time.

At the heart of this tempest stands Prince William, heir to the throne, burdened by the weight of expectation and responsibility. With Queen Consort Camilla seeking solace in distant lands, his wife Princess Catherine's absence leaves a void in the royal fold - a void that cannot be easily filled. Though Catherine shoulders many engagements independently in an effort to aid her husband, joint appearances aren't possible while she continues treatment and recovery.

While William and Catherine have done plenty of separate appearances over the years, they've also conducted many engagements together. But that reality isn't possible now. Some believe the Prince of Wales feels overwhelmed taking on so many duties without the Princess by his side. However, there are two members of his family who have really helped him during this challenging time - even with his brother Harry no longer in the picture.

William will have the support of his cousins Zara Tindall and Princess Beatrice. Though Zara Tindall lacks a formal title of her own, that hasn't stopped her from rising through the royal ranks and being regarded in the same esteem as the Princesses of York. In fact, as Princess Anne's daughter, Zara is proving such a success for the royal family that they're considering elevating her public profile to account for her newfound popularity.

"She's probably the most popular within the family," a source says of Zara. "She has great relationships with the king, queen, William, Catherine, the Yorks, and the Edinburgh's. The only ones she really doesn't have a great connection with are the Sussexes, but that's not much of a revelation - the rest of the royal family have similar feelings."

While some family members can be very formal, Zara is relaxed and playful with George, Charlotte, and Louis. It helps that they all have children around the same age who could play together privately, bringing a sense of normalcy to an otherwise stressful situation. Meanwhile, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie both have strategic royal roles, attending engagements where they look integral without overshadowing more senior family members.

The Princesses of York have been attending several royal engagements recently alongside other family, even though they're non-working royals. Beatrice and Eugenie were both spotted at Royal Ascot chatting playfully with cousins William, Zara, and others. They also joined a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May to support their cousins. Meanwhile, Beatrice sat in on roundtable discussions for William's Earthshot Prize awards when he was occupied with a state visit from the Japanese Emperor and Empress.

Eugenie has also lent support to Prince William when possible, such as attending his garden party in July. However, she's unable to help out as much or make as many appearances given she doesn't live in the U.K. full-time anymore. Still, William will have the backing of his Tindall and York cousins as he takes on additional responsibilities in Catherine's absence. Grant Harrold, Charles's former butler, says the king's children have "really helped" the Prince of Wales over these last several months as both he and Charles receive cancer treatments.

Even with the change in reign and Catherine's recovery, William maintains the strength and support of his extended family. Zara expertly conducts herself with great favor among the Windsors. And Beatrice takes strategic roles to bolster the next generation of the House of Windsor without overshadowing her elders. Though new challenges have emerged, tradition and family buoy the monarchy through this tempest, nurturing hope that clear skies may grace the dawn of William's reign.
