For any newcomer joining the royal family, it would understandably be an intimidating prospect to visit one of the Queen's private estates for the first time. However, when Kate Middleton accompanied Prince William to Balmoral Castle in the early days of their relationship, she received an exceptional show of warmth and acceptance from Queen Elizabeth herself.

According to royal author Katie Nish, the late Queen granted Kate a unique privilege on her first trip to the Scottish Highlands retreat - she was allowed to bring her camera and photograph the estate and surrounding countryside. While this may seem like a small gesture, Nish pointed out that it was a significant act of goodwill from the monarch. The Queen had only briefly met Kate at that point after she started dating Prince William, yet she made a special effort to make the newcomer feel at home by relaxing her usual photo policies.

As Nish explained, the Queen rarely lets her guard down in the public eye after a lifetime in the spotlight. Only her closest friends and family are privy to seeing Elizabeth's more personal side. By permitting Kate to document Balmoral through photographs, the Queen signalled her readiness to welcome her into the inner royal circle from the very beginning.

This gesture of acceptance was particularly meaningful given Kate would go on to marry Prince William and become an integral part of the royal family herself. Every year since, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have continued the beloved tradition of visiting Balmoral with their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis to make treasured memories just as William had done in his own childhood with the Queen and Prince Philip.

In fact, Kate revealed a previously unseen photo she had taken during her family's visit to Balmoral last summer, showing the late Queen surrounded by her great-grandchildren and grandchildren. Snapped just weeks before the monarch's passing in September 2022, it portrayed Elizabeth comfortably seated on a sofa beaming proudly as she was flanked by the younger royals. This picture bore resemblance to another family portrait Kate had taken in the past including the Queen and Prince Philip with many of the same young relatives.

On what would have been the Queen's 97th birthday on April 21st 2023, Kate tweeted the updated photo in tribute. It provided a touching glimpse into Elizabeth's final joyous moments surrounded by her family in the Scottish Highlands, the place she loved so dearly. The late Queen had spent her last weeks at Balmoral where, just two days before her death, she carried out her final public duty by formally appointing Liz Truss as Prime Minister from her residence on the estate.

Looking back, that small extension of permission for Kate to photograph Balmoral all those years ago was typical of the Queen's thoughtful consideration and quiet acts of welcome. It revealed her intent to smoothly integrate the prospective new royal into the family from the very start. Kate's new photograph, meanwhile, serves as a poignant reminder of Elizabeth's deep familial bond with her descendants, which she nurtured through many cherished summers shared together in the Scottish countryside at her beloved Balmoral Castle. The privilege of photographing the estate back then allowed Kate to capture moments like these that will now be forever treasured by the royal family.
