While much attention has been given to other senior royals in recent times, one member has steadily increased her workload behind the scenes - The Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie. As King Charles faces health issues and the Prince and Princess of Wales prioritize family, Sophie has stepped up to fill the gaps left by their reduced schedules.

An analysis of royal engagements shows Sophie has doubled her commitments in the past year. In September alone she completed 37 visits, dwarfing the 18 she managed in the same month last year. For 2023 as a whole, she was the fourth hardest working royal with 114 engagements. Only the King, Princess Anne, and her husband Prince Edward outpaced her efforts.

Sophie’s impact stretches beyond British shores as well. She made history as the first royal to visit Baghdad, Iraq and recently traveled to Tanzania promoting causes like preventing blindness from trachoma. Next month she and Edward will represent the UK in Malta. Internationally, Sophie champions health initiatives and empowering women - key priorities for the modern monarchy.

Before marrying into the royal family in 1999, Sophie ran her own successful PR firm. This background prepared her well for a life of public service and serving as an advocate on important issues. While less recognized than other Windsors, Sophie’s work ethic and commitment to communities large and small have earned her the nickname of ‘secret weapon.’

Her down-to-earth qualities were on full display during a recent visit to the Hale Youth and Community Centre in Fareham. Sporting a colorful, mismatched ensemble, Sophie joined in gardening activities with children and later shared tea and conversation indoors. Her warmth and enthusiasm left a lasting impression on attendees young and old.

Sophie continues to back causes close to her heart. As Patron of Sightsavers, a leading NGO combating neglected tropical diseases, she delivered a personal message from King Charles III to health officials during her recent trip to Tanzania. The King expressed gratitude and admiration for those fighting trachoma and working to realize “a world where inclusion and equality are realized.” His show of support underscores Sophie’s prominence on the global stage.

In Tanzania, Sophie promoted partnerships between the UK and Africa focusing on health, agriculture and empowering women. She visited multiple cities meeting with dignitaries and raising awareness for trachoma, which afflicts millions in developing nations. Her advocacy is making a real difference in combating preventable blindness.
