The former Kensington Palace home of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis has been described as a "prison for children", but the last few years have brought significant changes for the Wales family. One major shift came when the couple left their busy London life behind and relocated to the more secluded Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor Estate, along with their three children.

For five years, the family had lived together in Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace. However, it was said that William and Kate decided on the move to give their young children more freedom and independence as they grow. The idea that Kensington Palace restricts younger members of the royal family is not new. It was where another famous royal spent the unhappy first 18 years of her life under strict control.

Nestled privately within the 655-acre Home Park at Windsor, Adelaide Cottage provides George, Charlotte and Louis with a greater sense of privacy and freedom than they experienced in the heart of London. As one royal biographer noted, "Kensington Palace is a glorious prison for kids. They want to be able to play football without being watched from behind the gates." Another advantage of their new Windsor home, she said, is that "they will have lots of freedom and the children can all be at school together."

Indeed, Kensington Palace's most infamous young resident faced immense restrictions as a child living there. Queen Victoria grew up under the so-called "Kensington System" imposed by her ruthless mother and her controller, Sir John Conroy. Strict rules forbade Victoria from activities like reading popular books, walking down stairs unaccompanied, or spending time alone. The aim was to keep the heir to the throne emotionally dependent on her mother, reducing her ability to resist their influence over the monarchy. Thankfully, upon her 18th birthday Victoria succeeded in freeing herself from the system and their control.

Now 11 years old, Prince George is beginning to think seriously about his career aspirations beyond the throne he is expected to one day fill. While he won't follow royal tradition into the armed forces, the school-aged prince has revealed a surprising new dream job - working as a pizza chef! During a visit to a local cafe in Norfolk, George excitedly told the owner that making pizzas in the wood-fired oven is what he wants to do when he grows up.

George's daring new hobby of scuba diving was also recently disclosed by his father, Prince William. "We took him under thinking he would freak out, but he absolutely loves it," William explained. "It's just introducing him to the world of water." Both William and Kate are avid swimmers themselves, with the future king once captaining his university's water polo team. It seems the Wales children are developing a family passion for all things aquatic.

Towards the end of summer, George was even reportedly given the chance to try his hand at another royal family favourite - flying lessons, with an instructor at an airfield near the Wales' home in Windsor. The nine-year-old future king watched eagerly from the ground as his son took to the skies, following in the illustrious Aviation footsteps of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather before him. It's clear that with his promising new interests in the kitchen, underwater world and skies above, George is well on his way to carving his own path outside the confines of royal tradition - and outside the "glorious prison" of his former Kensington home.
