King Charles may have found the one occasion that could make Prince William and Prince Harry stand together again: a memorial service for their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. If plans move forward, the event would bring the royal family, Diana’s friends, relatives, and the public together under one roof, with cameras from around the world watching. And in that setting, William and Harry could find it almost impossible to avoid one another.
Reports suggest that a Thanksgiving service could be held in August 2027, marking 30 years since Diana died in a Paris car crash. According to the Daily Mail, the idea is being considered and the King has raised no objection. One possibility is that William could deliver a reading in his mother’s memory. A royal source described the idea as an inspirational way to remember Diana, while also suggesting that it could create an opportunity for the brothers to come together.
Other reports have gone even further, claiming that Charles wants both of his sons present, along with all five of Diana’s grandchildren. The hope, according to these reports, is that the occasion would remind William and Harry of the things that existed before their disagreements: family, their children, and their mother’s legacy.

That would make the proposed service far more significant than an ordinary royal engagement. Rather than ordering his sons to reconcile, Charles could be using a date connected to Diana as a reason neither brother could easily ignore.
The timing is also important. Charles is 77, and his health has made the question of time more significant for the royal family. A major tribute to Diana could therefore represent more than a memorial. It could be an opportunity for the King to bring his family together while he still can.
Harry is reportedly considering his own project to mark the anniversary, potentially including a documentary about his mother. Nothing has been finalized. William, meanwhile, has remained silent, while reports claim that he is not currently interested in reconciliation with his younger brother.
That distance has made the proposed memorial even more intriguing. The brothers have had several opportunities to meet over the years, but their relationship remains deeply strained. A service dedicated to Diana, however, would place them in a completely different situation.

There is another reason this reported plan has attracted so much attention. Only weeks ago, Charles Spencer, Diana’s brother, made painful claims about a conversation he says he had with Charles following Diana’s death.
In his memoir, Spencer described discussions surrounding Diana’s funeral and the question of whether William and Harry should walk behind their mother’s coffin. He attributed deeply upsetting words to Charles, including the suggestion that Diana would soon be forgotten. Spencer also described another conversation in which he believed Charles sounded unusually relieved following Diana’s death, connecting that reaction to the possibility of marrying Camilla.
These allegations were among the most serious claims surrounding the King and Diana’s final days. The palace did not directly address every detail. Instead, its response emphasized how grief can affect memory, judgment, and perception.
Whatever the truth behind those recollections, the timing of the new reports is striking. The King has now been linked to a proposal centered entirely on preserving Diana’s memory.

There is already a powerful precedent for such an occasion. In 2007, ten years after Diana’s death, William and Harry helped organize a memorial service at the Guards Chapel at Wellington Barracks. Hundreds of guests attended. William delivered a Bible reading, while Harry spoke emotionally about his mother and described her as the best mother in the world.
Their relationship was very different then. Yet the brothers were able to put their differences aside because the day belonged to Diana.
Fourteen years later, they did it again. In July 2021, William and Harry stood together at Kensington Palace to unveil Diana’s statue on what would have been her 60th birthday. By that point, their relationship had already deteriorated badly. Nevertheless, when it came to their mother, they stood side by side.
That history may be precisely what Charles is counting on.
The reported plan contains another potentially powerful element: Diana’s grandchildren. According to the reports, the King would like all five children present. That would mean Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Archie, and Lilibet appearing at the same event.

The five cousins have never appeared together publicly, making the possibility extraordinary in itself. George, Charlotte, and Louis have grown up in Britain, while Archie and Lilibet have lived primarily in the United States. Their shared connection is their grandmother, a woman none of them had the chance to know personally.
Diana’s influence is nevertheless present in their names. Charlotte’s full name includes Diana, while Lilibet also carries Diana as one of her names. The symbolism of all five grandchildren gathering to honor her would therefore be impossible to miss.
And imagine the image that would dominate headlines around the world: five grandchildren standing together in memory of Diana, with William and Harry nearby.
That could create a form of emotional pressure that no private conversation between the brothers could reproduce. Either man might be able to decline a meeting with his father or brother. But refusing to attend a service honoring their mother, particularly in front of their own children, would carry an entirely different meaning.
There are still important uncertainties. The service has not been officially confirmed. The reports are based on unnamed sources, and neither William nor Harry has publicly committed to attending. Charles has also not announced a final plan.
Three developments will therefore be worth watching. First, whether Buckingham Palace formally announces a date and location. Second, whether Harry proceeds with a documentary or another tribute to Diana. And third, whether William agrees to participate, perhaps by giving a reading as he did in 2007.
That final decision could be particularly revealing.
Almost three decades ago, William and Harry walked behind their mother’s coffin through the streets of London. William was 15. Harry was only 12. They walked together because they had lost the person who mattered most to both of them.
Now, as the 30th anniversary approaches, their father may be hoping that Diana’s memory can achieve what years of private conversations have failed to accomplish.
Charles cannot force his sons to repair their relationship. But he may be able to create one moment when they have a reason to stand together again.
